Roc looks at Legendary Encounters Firefly

Hey everyone… while I’m still working on a few things here at the Nest my fellow Flock member ( He has a special place in my heart as does this game ) took the time to give us a nice review on Firefly! Hope you enjoy. He as few as few other friends will be doing similar reviews on our and coming Thoughts of the Flock Review site. Thank you and I hope you enjoy.

Hello all, Roc here bringing you my first review for the Flock. Today I’m writing a quick review on Legendary Encounters: Firefly. I’ve been a fan of the Legendary series of games for a while now, enjoying the deckbuilding mechanic, swapping the options of decks to build from, and the challenge of building a good engine/figuring out how to deal with a new mechanic. The latest addition to the Encounters series has fixed some of the ‘issues’ with the previous versions and is quickly becoming a new favorite of mine.

For those unfamiliar with Legendary, it is a deckbuilding set of games with a “mostly co-op” feel. All players are working to stave off the tide of enemies or events flowing at them from the enemy deck while recruiting cards into their own decks in an attempt to stay afloat. The Encounters took the co-op feel to the next level by adding cards that can benefit other players directly (and in doing so helping yourself.) All players are working towards a common goal: earning credits and exploring the ‘verse.

Overall Firefly feels like you’re recruiting your favorite characters to keep Serenity flying straight and true, as shiny as she ever is. You’ll have to keep her and her crew safe from Reavers, alliance, and misfortune through the ‘verse. If you feel Kaylee doesn’t have a spot on your crew, expect bits to fall off your ship. Don’t want to bring Simon? You’ll have to get creative with keeping yourself up and earning credits. And who will hit your own team if Jayne isn’t there to do it?

Each character has an extremely unique feel both as an avatar and as a recruitable set (all characters will be in one category or the other.) The game has some excellent elements that improved on the Encounters system that made the game an absolute joy to play. Every episode feels unique in playstyle and feel which ends up being very thematic.

For veterans of the game series it has a slightly different feel that eliminates some of the issues I’ve seen with Alien and Predator; there is a slight delay after each goal is achieved (prevents being snowballed by getting a little behind.) It also allows you to bring characters back from the dead, which can help with those random big strikes. It also has a way to play through the whole show maintaining the same deck/characters.
As a whole, I think this is a solid addition to the Legendary series with great theme and solid gameplay mechanics. I highly recommend this to any fans of the series who have dabbled in board games or for die-hard Legendary fans who want a slight variance. The game isn’t going to completely replace any games in my collection, but is surely turning out to be a group favorite.

Thanks for reading, send all complaints to the momma hen and all the praise this way.

Cheers

ROC
